GramaJudy writes: I think the most interesting costume I ever made was a tube of AIM Toothpaste.Let me explain.I sewed a "tube"(pardon the punn)out of white fabric and added loose sleeves to it. Down the front I painted in large block letters the word Aim in the appropriate colors. For the "mask"I purchased a white waste basket with octogon shaped sides and cut out holes for eyes, nose and mouth. Here is what cinched the deal!I had my husband make a 5 foot tooth brush from a piece of stair railing. He painted it bright yellow and attached a scrub brush to one end. It turned out really cool.It got lots of compliments too.

So I created costumes for the Jolly Green Giant and The Lilttle Green Sprout. I used dark green tights and green turtle necks for the under clothing. Then made a one shoulder short sheath covered with leaves cut from green felt veined with magic marker and glued them all over the sheaths.
I then used a wig head and a nylon stocking for the head cover, glueing leaves all over it. Halloween night I painted my oldest with green tempera paint (not the baby though as his hands were constantly in his mouth). We went to a large city wide Halloween party and they won first place and got gift certifates for $100 each, photo made the front page of the newspaper the next day. This was back in 1973, that was alot of money!

And myself and my aunt (only slightly older than me) were the horses pulling the wagon. It was a pretty inexpensive Halloween. As horses we had burlap made to mimic horse heads and we wore our jeans. We were hitched to the wagon with rope. And I'm sure most of my sister's outfit came from existing closes. It was creative, inexpensive, and a lot of family fun.

Bought a suit and shirt at a local thrift store, cut them in half (kept the body of the pants, just cut off the other leg to shorts length) and sewed material onto the other side to resemble a dress. hard to find shoes that had the same heel height, so I was a little lop-sided, but said I could dance with anyone that night, depending on which angle you approached me!

SewJoe writes: When my son (now a teenager) was three, he was over-the-top obsessed with vacuum cleaners. We used to visit the vacuum aisle at Sears, it was hysterical watching him look at them one by one and tinker with the attachments, etc.

So naturally, he was a vacuum cleaner that year for Halloween. I have costumed many theatrical plays, so those skills helped. I copied the red Dirt Devil model using red shiny vinyl with a big metal zipper in the back. I added black tubing and mini-vacuum parts like the 'on-board' attachments, even a Dirt Devil logo stuck on with glue. I attached wheels too. He was in heaven and wore it so proudly.

Made one out of Bright chartreuse one was florescent orange and one florescent green. Then I stuffed the the waist and hips with crepe paper. I dressed them in long sleeved black turtle neck shirts and black tights under the costumes. Then I added a form fitting cap that I made that came down and hooked under their chins. I made those out of the same as the suits and I put 2 pipe cleaners out of the top with styrofoam balls on the top of them that I had painted to match the suits. Then I clown paint and colored it to match their suits. They were so cute. Every one commented on it. However my oldest son is now 44 and he still has not forgiven me for the tights.

Cherlyn writes: When my children were young, this has been over 20 years ago, I purchased patterns to make my son a spider costume and my daughter a butterfly. I had difficulty locating some of the items listed on both so I had to improvise using things I could find locally. My son needed a web, so I had to create this using yarn instead of a fabric that was listed on the pattern. My daughter's wings were made from a multi-color scale design metallic fabric that was made to fit bent clothing hangers. She received several compliments on her wings during the evening.

We used a black sweat suit, and painted soda bottles for air tanks, goggles and a snorkel etc. They were so cute. I wish I could find a pic to show.

ipodgrannie writes: I made my granddaughter a mermaid costume about two years ago. I had hand sewn beads on it and it was just beautiful. And she looked so cute in it and she felt like a queen. Told her she had to save it for my other granddaughter to wear. I think she was about eight when I made it. It had a shell purse with it and I used a fringy fabric for the body of it so it looked like scales of the fish. Its had sparkly stuff on it too. I made a cape to go over it as she lives in Alaska.

scrapslady writes: A friend of mine took green leotards, purple balloons, and grape leaves to make a bunch of grapes out of herself. She wore the leotards for the stem, blew up the balloons and attached them all over the leotards, and placed grape leaves into the "grapes." It was clever and cute but not practical. The guys popped the balloons, leaving her in green leotards with grape leaves stuck all over! She decided not to use that idea again.
