1939 Vintage Reproduction Rayon Coat
comments (1) October 15th, 2010 in galleryVogue 2669, Original 1939 Vintage Design: Fitted, unlined, slightly flared coat has raised neckline, fold-back facings, front bands, upper bands extending into tie ends (lower bands/pockets) and long sleeves. [This pattern also includes the dress which I am wearing under the coat.]
This coat is one of those fabulous Vogue reproductions. I can’t stop making them! And yes, I do wear these vintage styles most days, and I do get a few funny looks, but I just don’t care.
I knew that I wanted to line the coat, even though the pattern does not call for one (I don’t own a serger, and I am not a fan of unlined coats and jackets). The lining fabric of the coat matches the fashion fabric from the dress. Using dress fabric to line a matching coat is more of a 1950s/1960s trend, but I love the idea, and thought it would work well for this design. Both of my fabrics are rayon - the lavendar almost looks like linen, and the blue lining has a lovely geometric pattern that I thought added to the retro look.
Vogue has rated this pattern “Advanced” and I would tend to agree, although this is not clear from the line drawings. The bands that extend into the tie ends and finish the pockets are quite tricky (this design element is used to finish the dress neckline as well). There is a lot of turning narrow bands right side out, many, many points involved, and some topstitching as well. Those pockets also posed the biggest problem for inserting the lining, but I prevailed!
The coat pockets kept drooping on my finished garment, so I inserted self-fabric covered snaps at the midpoint of each pocket.
The pattern recommends using dress weights inserted into the front hem. Instead, I used two nickles covered in fabric (this was a quicker alternative to finding dress weights – everyone always has loose change on hand!).
