houndstooth fall jacket for jacket challenge
comments (1) October 17th, 2010 in galleryI designed this fall jacket for this contest and my friend "k", a young professional. I wanted to design something that can be worn dressed up for meeting a client, or dressed down with jeans on a casual chilly night out with friends. i chose a large black and white houndstooth outerwear fabric, and big red buttons to set it off. The big collar can be worn high on the neck, or unbutton the top button, and leave the collar open and flat for another look.
This classic trench coat style jacket boasts this falls trend toward BIG: collar, cuffs and buttons, and the oversized houndstooth pattern of the fabric. The return of the gathered sleeve at the shoulder adds to the other vintage details, The jacket has inset pockets in the side seams, a placket in the back at the waist attached by more big buttons, and a vent for ease in sitting. This fabric has a vinyl coating on the back side that will work well protecting from the autumn winds. The jacket lining is a black cotton/poly blend.
I have been designing clothes using the draping method for about 15 years. i have always loved working in 3 dimmensions. i used muslin to make a pattern. I graded most of the seams to reduce bulk. i topstiched the waistline seam to flatten the fabric as much as possible. There is a flat black button attaching the inside flap to the outside at the waist .
