Basting in the hoop is exactly what it sounds like. Before any embroidery actually starts, you can program your machine to stitch around the design with a long basting stitch (or you can download these stitches for free).

The basting stitches hold the fabric and stabilizer together around the area that the design will embroider. This is especially helpful when you are using temporary adhesive spray to adhere the fabric in the hoop (instead of hooping the fabric).
