If you like to wear kneesocks, how about adding a fun little embellishment to your favorite pairs for fall? I chose two pairs I like and added little button rosettes to each one-one felt "flower" and one button-ribbon combination. This is a quick, easy project to do, and you probably have everything you need at home!

For the felt flower rosettes, you'll need:

  • A favorite pair of kneesocks
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Pinking shears
  • Two matching buttons
  • Craft felt

1. Cut four circles out of felt with your pinking shears-two that are about 1.25 inches across and two that are about 1.5 inches across. Layer them together in two stacks, with the smaller circle centered over the bigger one.

2. Choose a spot just below the upper edge of each of your socks, and place the felt circles there. Make sure that they'll each be on the outer side of your socks while you're wearing them. Layer one button onto each stack, as shown in the top photo above.

3. Stitch the stacks down securely with your needle and thread, knotting at the back.

For the ribbon rosettes, you'll need:

  • A favorite pair of kneesocks
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Two pairs of matching sew-through buttons to layer together
  • Two 3.5-inch pieces of ribbon
  • Straight pins

1. Use your scissors to snip V shapes at both ends of each ribbon. It's easiest if you fold the ribbon in half longways and snip a diagonal.

2. Fold the ribbons in half like an upside-down V, and pin them to a spot just below the upper edge. Make sure that they'll each show on the outer side of your socks while you're wearing them. Layer one smaller button onto one larger one, as shown in the top photo above.

3. Stitch the buttons down over the top of the folded ribbon V, hiding the fold completely, and knot at the back.

That's it! For variation, try changing the size of your felt circles, using two different contrast colors, using two strands of ribbon instead of one, or varying the length of your ribbons.

One last tip: Once you've embellished your socks, you may want to hand-wash them if the materials are delicate, like a silk ribbon, for example.
