Round African Style Basket made from Recycled Tee Shirts
comments (0) April 28th, 2011 in galleryI designed this basket to resemble the beautiful elephant grass baskets made in Ghana. I knitted it in a simple garter stitch on circular needles after I cut several old tee shirts into strips to make a very strong and yet soft yarn. I used some eyelash yarn to accent the colors of the tee shirts and to give the basket some interest. The handle and rim of the basket were made by crocheting over a recycled ethernet wire using a varigated cotton yarn.
This basket is made with 90% upcycled and recycled materials. The only new items used in this project are the small amount of eyelash yarn and the cotton yarn used in the handles and the rim of the basket.
You can use this beautiful basket when you go to the market, or to carry the mail into your house, or take your purse, phone, water bottle and anything else you may want back and forth from the car. Can you imagine how cute this would look sitting on your kitchen counter filled with fresh oranges? I actually did this the other day. I picked oranges off our tree and carried them into the house using this basket. It even looks beautiful emply. And because of the strong rim, the the basket will hold its shape even when it's empty.
Visit our Etsy shop to buy this basket. We will be making this basket in two other color combinations--sunset colors (reds, oranges, & purples) and earthy colors (browns and greens). Colors will vary depending on tee shirt availability. If you want a particular color combination "made to order" basket, please contact us.
