No one knows when the custom began.  The wearing a red string bracelet is a Kabbalah custom.  Mean to ward off harm brought by an evil eye. In Yiddish the red string is also known as a roite bindele.  The red string is made from thin red thread.  Worn or tied into a bracelet usually worn on the left wrist or the receiving side of the person.  The red string is thought to have great powers of luck and karma.
