The symbol of the elephant is wide spread through out the world.  In most Asian cultures the elephant is a symbol of wisdom.  Think of the saying, "An elephant never forgets."  The elephant is also one of the Seven Jewlels of Royal Power associated with Buddhism.  The elephant here stands as a symbol gentleness and calmness.  In Africa, the elephant symbolizes status and power, since royalty would ride elephants.  Across many cultures though the elephant is a good luck charm.  Associated with good fortune and the symbol today, is used in quite a few ways.  From a friendship bracelet, to on tees, and even handbags or totes.  As a culture, we embrace many other culture's good luck charms, but the elephant as remaind a more popular one.
