Trefoil means three leaves and the symbol can be found throughout many cultures.  This symbol along with its sister counterpart, the quatrefoil orginated in gothic artchitecture.  This symbol is used in a variety of other ways beside just architecture.  The girl scouts use it as their badge of courage (sort to speak).  I used it in my homemade earrings.  On your recycle bin, you'll find an arrow version of the trefoil.  As well as on anything marked radio-active.  The beauty of the symbol is its basic shape taken of course from nature.
