Gloves - Fingers to Fingerless

Gloves – Fingers to Fingerless – Knit or Sewn - easy for anyone

Wear to keep your hands warm, but fingertips free, while driving, typing, texting, reading, sleeping, etc.

I knit very, very, very slowly, so this is my quick & easy process to turn ready-made gloves with fingers into fingerless gloves.

For those who don’t knit at all or have never even sewn a button back on, they can make the “sewn” version.

Note, to make leather or canvas gloves fingerless, just cut the fingertips off & you’re done, as the material won’t unravel.

Materials:

Store bought gloves (Every September, I stock up with super long slouch gloves bought at my local Dollar Tree store.)

Knit Version - Double pointed needles (dpns) (I use size 2, set of 4)

Sewn Version – Tapestry or other blunt edge needle (or even a crochet hook to pull yarn through each”hole”)

Overview of both versions:

Knit Version (Knit Version photo shows each step using a single finger to demonstrate)

Little Finger – glove finger as is

Ring Finger – about 1/2” cut off with raw edges still visible

Middle Finger – yarn pulled gently until finger is about one 1/8” below desired length

Index Finger – dpns in place and binding off begun

      Thumb – binding off complete

Sewn Version (Sewn Version photo only showing the weaving portion – see the knit version photo & overview above for the cutting off & unraveling steps)

Finger on left – tapestry needle woven through a few stitches

Finger on right – tapestry needle woven through all stitches two full times, then tied off

Basic direction for both versions:

Cut about 1/2” off a fingertip.

Pull gently to unravel yarn until finger length is about 1/8” less than desired.  (Do not cut this unraveled yarn, as you will be using it for both versions.)

Using either the dpns or the tapestry needle, pick up each “stitch” (or “hole” or “loop”).

(First timers: hold top of unraveled finger gently, but firmly to prevent any further unraveling & try to go into each “hole” in the same direction each time.)

Fasten off & cut yarn, leaving a few inches to weave into the inside of each finger.

To keep on track, I do the same finger on each glove before proceeding to the next finger.

Knit version:

Bind off loosely using your favorite method.

If you bind off tightly, you need to use either a larger needle size or Jeny Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off (see http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall09/FEATjssbo.php )

If the fingers are a tight fit before you begin, then do a round or two of “knit in the front & back of next stitch, knit 1” before doing the bind off.

Sewn version:

Weave needle (threaded with the unraveled yarn) through all stitches all the way around once, pull on finger opening to loosen thread.

Then, weave needle all the way around again.

Pull on finger opening again to loosen thread to necessary finger opening width, plus a little extra for finger movement.

Variations for Knit Version:

Pull yarn for about 1/2” below desired end point, then knit 1, purl 1, for about 1/2” before binding off.

Bind off in a different color of yarn for contrast.
