Moriah's party dress
comments (2) December 26th, 2012 in galleryThis is my sister's "dream dress". She turned 16 this Holiday season and I wanted to make her something extra special for her birthday and Christmas. We combined some of her favorite details with her favorite color and came up with this! I based the sleeves off of a vintage patttern, but otherwise I created the pattern just for my sister.
I hand-finished everything that would show from the right side, including the sleeve edges and hem (all 6 yards of it). Even the lapped side zipper is stiched in with pick stitches. The shot tafetta really shows off the movement of the full skirt, and I cut the bodice to show off the different shades as well - midriff=crosswise, bodice=lengthwise, sleeves=bias. One of my sister's favorite details is piping, so I used it on either side of the midriff band as well as to finish the neckline. It was also important to her that the sleeves not be binding at all - she likes to do ballroom dancing - so I made cap sleeves cut on the bias. After dancing at a party, she says they're perfect!
One last thing. I can't take credit for the matching hair flower - our youngest sister (age 13) made that!
