Hi, I'm Nikki, a craft-aholic since I can remember. Growing up I would make flower arrangements and wreaths for my mom to hang on the door. When I was 11 or 12 I got my first sewing machine, a Singer, because I told my grandmother when I grew up I was going to have a good job and have the money to take as many sewing lessons as I could. When I just got out into the working world (reporter for a small local newspaper), I discovered the Knifty Knitter knitting looms. It wasn't the "real" thing, but I always thought knitting may be interesting. I get what I thought was a moving-up-the-ladder job when one day I looked at one of my empty looms and thought, "I still haven't made the time to learn or do what I love." So I started a baby blanket. Well, being self-taught, mistakes happened and it made me think, "Maybe if I learned to knit 'for real' (with needles), I would understand the stitches better and be better able to get myself out of trouble." By accident during a visit at the local craft store, I met who'd become my knitting loom and needle knitting teachers. I started to knit, which took a little while to get down the coordination, and then I heard my teachers say, "You don't need to know how to knit in order to crochet, but you need crochet in order to knit." When I learned what that meant I was instantly hooked (no pun intended). So of course I took lessons and now crochet is my ultimate love if I had to choose just one (which would put me in unbearable agony). Anyway, the new job got lost, and I went back to the old. Then a few months ago, while having a re-occurring bout of "my career is going nowhere," I decided one morning in the shower (usually the only time to myself during the day so it's where I do all my big thinking) that I was going to learn to make a quilt. I remembered that promise I made to my grandmother about sewing, and I thought it was time to fulfill it. And since moving into my (first) new home, I've decided to become addicted to learning how to sew home items like curtains and pillows. So now the purchase of how-to quilting and sewing books is piling up on the credit card (don't tell my boyfriend). So have you gotten the idea that I'm totally CRAFT OBSESSED yet? Basically, it's always the place I've gone back to to find some happiness. It's where I can truly express myself. I feel pride in that.

Re: The Importance of Blocking: A How To
I've heard of blocking but never really knew what it was. Thanks for taking something I sort of feared and feared learning about, turning it into a simple technique that everyone can do.
