Re: Notes from My First Pattern-Making Class

A sloper (I've never heard the word before either)is what I think we'd call a basic block - either skirt, bodice, sleeve or trouser, and from which you draft any future pattern from so they need to be updated as you change/grow.

Re: What sewing projects are you working on this week?

I've just been asked to 'reorganise' a bought bridesmaid's' dress, for a wedding in August next year.It is currently a smaller size than it needs to be so the prospective (13 yr old)wearer is to lose some weight. It will probably benefit from some boning too - also a change from the current zipper back fastening - to a lace up. The material is a gorgeous aubergine/plum coloured polyester, embellished with glittery crystals & ruched down one side of the front.

I'm still just mentally tossing ideas around so any comments/helpful suggestions are always welcome

Re: What sewing mistake has taught you the most?

Before starting to cut any material ( of course assuming the pattern is all checked & ready to lay on the fabric), I always pull a weft thread right across the material, & cut along it, to ensure an absolute 'true' grain. I've even been known to point it out to the shop assistant if there is an obvious defect in the fabric on the roll. Its probably one of the best lessons learnt this from my needlework teacher at school.
