I learned to sew on my mother-in-laws 1938 Singer. My daughter had just turned one when Ms. Martha passed away at the age of 86 and then there was the issue of her 86 years of sewing stuff. At first, I thought it was just a table but my husband showed me that it folded open to reveal a tucked away sewing machine! The only sewing experience I had up to that point was a short-lived career in 6th grade Home Ec class where I was allowed to stab myself in the finger with a sewing needle every day for almost a full 2 months. I had been completely turned off to sewing as a child.
But here was this essential part of Ms. Marthas life, in desperate need of some serious TLC. After ordering a new rubber wheel for the bobbin winder (which had dry-rotted over the years) and getting some parts off eBay, I had the machine working almost like new. Since then Ive been making clothes for my daughter and even a few for myself. Now Im a total fanatic and while Im not in sewing, Im in thrift stores finding the cutest fabric from larger dresses, curtains, & even some brand new sheets with a cute pattern. Hooray for recycling!
