Lauren Simone is a Maine-based artist who specializes in cartography. Lauren is intrigued by the significance and potential of maps while removing them from their original contexts to reinvent their meaning. With ink, watercolor, tea, and thread, she creates aerial landscapes, drawing on antique maps and spontaneity. Most maps were made through free association, where the ink seemed to have control itself, telling the artist about secret elevations and valleys that she did not know about.
Lauren has a degree in Elementary Education and Spanish, but she also studied art at Roger Williams University and while studying abroad in Spain. She has taught children’s art classes at the Attleboro Art Museum and the Children’s Museum of Maine. She currently incorporates art and art history into her curriculum at Roots Enrichment Center in Portland.
Lauren has shown her work in galleries across New England, and is a part of a permanent collection at Whitney Art Works in Portland, ME.

You might not find your hometown in Lauren Simone’s drawings, but you will recognize somewhere you've never been.
