For my Dads 76th birthday I made him a Native American water dipper from a gourd I grew on my acreage. I spent many hours studying the various tribes traditional patterns. This is a combo of Comanche, Pueblo, Cheroke, and my own designs. Here is the side/back veiw. I hope you enjoy!
This pic is of the bottom of the dipper. The ornate flower design is my interpretation of a native American flower design. Had I known of the flower challenge, I think I might have entered this piece.
Here it is almost finished. The washing, gutting, sanding and painting is now done. The only thing left to do is sealing it with a matte fininsh, then drilling all the way around the opening and lacing around it to give it more structural strength overall.
Heres the finished front, though it is hard to tell from the picture that the cream colored area is actually the wide mouthed opening. The lacing is finally through. I was soooo worried I would crack the thin shell drilling all those holes. LOL
This is a closeup of the mouth of the vessel and the lacing. Harder than it appears. I wound up with approximately 30 hours of work on it and am well pleased with the results. Please let me know if there is anything you could suggest to improve my work.

Combo of Traditional Native American and my own design for a water dipper from a gourd found on my property. My Dad loves Native American Design and has written several semi-fiction books on Native Americans. I try every year to paint him something in the genre for his birthday, Father's Day and Christmas. I have painted him everything from portraits to busts, pipes and now gourds. All comments are welcome! :-)
