We love Cal Patch. There's no doubt about that. Her tutorials on CraftStylish and articles in SewStylish always leave us wanting more.

We're so proud to announce that this week Cal's new book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified (Potter Craft, 2009), is available in bookstores and we're giving away 5 free copies!

Cal's book is jam-packed with everything you need to know about starting to make your own clothes. She walks you through taking measurements correctly and drafting patterns to fit your body. Cal even includes how-to sewing information for each project that is easy to understand and leaves you feeling like you could be the next Marc Jacobs.

The book is divided into 3 sections: Before You Begin, Making the Patterns, and Customizing, Fitting and Grading. In each section are projects that will help walk you through pattern drafting by learning to make tops, skirts, pants, and dresses. Cal also included info on making patterns from favorite items you already have in your closet.

Way to go Cal! I love this book, and I'm sure it would make the perfect reference for anyone looking to make their own designs.

For more on Cal, check out her website, Hodge Podge, or her tutorials on CraftStylish.

Leave a comment on this post by 11:59pm on Wednesday, September 30th, for a chance to win a copy of this new book.

5 winners will be chosen at random and will be announced on Thursday, October 1st.

Having worked for 10 years in the finance world, I think I should finally pursue my passions. Bought all episodes of PRW and trying to get rich sewing/designing books to guide me on my path to my destiny. This would surely get me dancing if I get it :-). Good luck everyone!!

minnie_grace writes: Inspiration comes from many places - nature, the look and feel of a particular fabric, historical fashion, a costly outfit that was seen in a boutique, etc. My mother was married in 1939 when few families had funds available for a wedding. My mother and grandmother went to Fields in the Chicago loop where my grandfather worked as a tailor. There my mother fell in love with a dress much too expensive for the family's limited budget. That did not stop my determined grandmother. She studied the much loved gown, and then proceeded to make a copy. The result was spectacular!

I have followed in my grandmother's footsteps. I see something that I like, draw a sketch, and then attempt to replicate it - but generally with a few added touches of my own. Do all of my attempts result in successes? Many do, but not all. I am always on the lookout of additional tips that will help me translate my ideas into eye-catching wearable art!I am sure that Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified would have some good ideas for all of us.

mamoon writes: I'm new to sewing. One of the reasons I started was my daughter. We (with great love and affection) describe her shape as a potato. She's 4'10", chunky and shaped like a potato with legs, arms and a head.

After years of tears when school clothes shopping, I told her if she likes something we'll buy two of them and I'll make it into one that fits her.

So I've started sewing. I've been fortunate in that all my projects so far have turned out very well. The dress which needed some love (as my kids say)turned out surprisingly good. My daughter loves it and wears it regularly. The others are being worked on, so I'm hopeful they turn out as well.

Any help in creating clothes for a teenager with a difficult shape to fit would be a wonderful thing.

I've only been sewing seriously for about a year, so I still have a lot to learn. But I am determined! What I really want is a book that I can go through, complete one or two versions of each project, and by the end have a construction basis for each basic piece of clothing as a jumping off point. This book sounds perfect! It would be awesome to win a copy!
